This student volunteer week we’re sharing what our Keele Medical students are getting up to.

Student Jessica and some of her classmates are on placement with us at Revival over the next couple of months. They're shadowing staff to get to grips with hospitals and the healthcare industry and will help prepare them for their medical careers.

We have a team based at Royal Stoke Hospital supporting people admitted. Helping them to be discharged and live happily and healthily at home. Hospital Support Worker Nadia visits customers on the wards and provides practical and emotional support to allow discharge.

This week she’s been showing Jessica the ropes at Royal Stoke, and this is what they got up to:

“We visited a gentleman on the ward today and dropped off a food parcel to support his discharge. We got talking to Jim* and he told us he was ashamed of his home and didn’t want strangers in his house because it was a mess.

“He had isolated himself for over 15 years because he’s ashamed to let anyone in. The mess was also becoming a trip and fall hazard too. We wanted to make his home somewhere he could thrive and somewhere he would be safe in.

“Together Jess and I encouraged him to read about Revival and to think about a cleaning service. We left him with a leaflet and came back later that day.

“When he saw us again he smiled. He was a lot more talkative, and you could tell he felt more comfortable in our presence.

“We’ll catch up with Jim once he’s been discharged home. He’ll see our familiar and now trusted faces, and we'll help to make his home a clean and safe space.

“Jess was great on the ward and with the customer today. She listened and helped me to put Jim* at ease. It’s helped her to see what the ward environment is like. It's also handy to see how local partners and agencies work together with the hospital to get the very best outcome for the customer.

“If you’re thinking of volunteering to get a better understanding of healthcare or hospitals Revival is a great option because we have so many services all working together to help local people live happily and healthily at home.
