At 23 years old, Sam was preparing to welcome their first child. Living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a condition that causes joints to easily dislocate, Sam was managing as best they could, but everyday tasks were becoming increasingly difficult.
Although Sam had a good level of independence, simple activities like lifting, reaching, or walking up steep stairs risked painful dislocations. Sam was also waiting for a social care assessment to arrange a personal assistant, so in the meantime, Adult Social Care referred Sam to Revival for practical support at home.
Listening, reassuring, and supporting
From the very first visit, our team recognised how important it was to help Sam feel calm, informed, and in control. Knowing that Sam sometimes struggled with complex information and could become overwhelmed, we made sure every visit felt clear and predictable.
The team would always call on the morning of each visit to let Sam know exactly when to expect them, a simple step that made a big difference in easing anxiety.
During visits, our Revival Support Workers helped with everyday tasks like emptying the dishwasher, hoovering, and putting away washing and medical supplies. With Sam’s steep stairs, these small acts of support were vital to prevent falls and reduce the strain that could lead to joint dislocation.
We also helped Sam apply for a maternity grant, and she was successfully awarded £500, an important boost as she prepared for the arrival of her baby.
Helping through pregnancy and beyond
As Sam’s pregnancy progressed, daily life became harder to manage alone. Her partner worked full-time and wasn’t available during the day, and while a mental health support worker usually helped once a week, they were on leave for a short time.
During that period, the Revival team made sure Sam still had the help she needed. We supported her with food shopping, ensuring her wheelchair could be brought along so she could take part comfortably and safely.
Over time, Sam built a strong rapport with the team, trusting them to support her in ways that respected her independence while keeping her safe.
Feeling Supported and Included
Sam has told us how much the visits have meant, not just for the practical help, but for the companionship and encouragement they provided. The regular visits reduced the risk of dislocations and helped Sam stay well throughout her pregnancy.
“Revival’s support helped me stay safe, manage at home, and feel less alone.”
Sam continues to praise the Revival team for their care, compassion, and understanding. The support has enabled her to remain independent and confident in her own home, while waiting for longer-term arrangements to be put in place.
