Mary’s story: rebuilding confidence through befriending

Older Woman Laughing Outside

At Revival, our befriending service is all about helping people feel less alone and more confident in their day-to-day lives. Sometimes, it’s the simple things, a regular chat, shared interests, or a friendly face, that make the biggest difference. Mary’s story shows how meaningful connection can help someone regain their independence after a difficult time.

Finding confidence again after a setback
When Mary was first introduced to the befriending service, she spoke openly about how she had been feeling. After a hospital stay and ongoing health challenges, she had become increasingly isolated and had lost a lot of her confidence.

Things that once felt routine, like going out to appointments, had started to feel overwhelming. Mary hoped that having a befriender would help her rebuild her confidence and begin to feel more like herself again.

Building a connection that mattered
From the very first visits, Mary and her befriender began to build a warm and supportive relationship. Their time together was relaxed and enjoyable, often spent chatting over cake or working together in the garden.

These simple, shared moments helped Mary feel more comfortable and at ease. Having someone there to listen and spend time with made a real difference to how she felt each week.

Taking steps towards independence
As their visits continued, Mary began to feel more confident in herself. With gentle encouragement, she started working towards her goal of getting out more independently, including using taxis to attend appointments like the hairdressers and opticians.

Each small step helped rebuild her sense of independence and control.

A positive change
Over time, Mary could see how far she had come. She shared how much the support had meant to her, describing her befriender as “wonderful” and saying she had made so much progress because of the encouragement and companionship she received.

What started as a way to reduce loneliness became something much more, an important part of her journey back to feeling confident and connected.

The difference a friendly face can make
Mary’s story is a reminder that befriending is about more than just company. It’s about building trust, restoring confidence and helping people take positive steps forward at their own pace.

Through simple, meaningful connection, Revival’s befriending service helps people feel supported, valued and more able to live independently in their own homes.
