At Revival, we know that living independently at home is about more than just practical support. Feeling connected, heard, and valued plays a huge part in overall wellbeing. For many people across Stoke-on-Trent, loneliness and isolation can quietly build over time, affecting confidence and quality of life.
John’s story shows how the right support can help someone rediscover connection, rebuild confidence, and find a renewed sense of purpose.
A difficult starting point
When John was first referred to Revival, he was living in an environment that was not safe or suitable for his wellbeing. Alongside this, he was experiencing isolation and had very limited social interaction, which was beginning to impact how he felt day to day.
Working alongside partner services, Revival helped ensure John could move into a safer, more supportive living environment. This was an important first step, giving him the stability he needed to begin looking ahead.
Rebuilding confidence and connection
Once John was settled, Revival reconnected with him to understand how he was feeling and what might help him move forward. Although his living situation had improved, it was clear that he would benefit from more social connection and someone he could talk to openly.
With his agreement, John was introduced to Revival’s Befriending Service, designed to support people who may be feeling lonely or disconnected.
The power of being heard
John was thoughtfully matched with a befriender who took the time to get to know him as a person. Through regular conversations, he began to feel more comfortable sharing his thoughts and experiences.
Having someone who would listen without judgement made a real difference. Over time, John became more confident, more engaged, and less isolated. The simple act of having consistent, meaningful contact helped him feel valued again.
Rediscovering interests and building community
As the relationship developed, John’s befriender learned about his interest in chess. With encouragement, this interest became an opportunity to reconnect with others.
John went on to set up a small chess group within his supported living environment. This gave him a sense of purpose and helped him form new connections with people around him, turning a personal interest into a shared experience.
A new chapter
After completing twelve weeks with the befriending service, John’s confidence had grown significantly. He was feeling more positive, more connected, and more in control of his day-to-day life.
Inspired by his own journey, he has now begun the process of becoming a befriender himself. He is looking forward to supporting someone else who may be feeling the way he once did, offering the same understanding and encouragement he received.
Supporting independence through connection
John’s story highlights how important connection is when it comes to living independently. With the right support, it’s possible not only to reduce loneliness, but to rebuild confidence, rediscover interests, and feel part of a community again.
Revival’s Befriending Service plays a vital role in making this happen, offering friendly, one-to-one support that helps people feel less alone and more empowered in their everyday lives.
